Just beyond Downtown, the River Arts District has grown in recent years, with over 200 studios and galleries spread out in former warehouses and buildings by the river. Twice a year, in spring and fall, the Studio Stroll gives visitors a chance to experience art firsthand, meeting the artists in their studios and watching how they create in a wide range of media. An exciting attraction in the RAD is The Foundation, home to Wedge Brewing at Foundation and the new location of 12 Bones BBQ, known for President Obama’s two visits. This area is a key connection in the Asheville Greenway master plan. Planned sections will link with existing ones over the coming years, giving residents of Asheville Terrace access to miles of greenway right outside their doorstep. Cross the French Broad River and you enter West Asheville, home to hipster bars and vintage shops that line Haywood Road. Once filled with blue-collar families, West Asheville has morphed into a gritty blend of yoga studios, tattoo parlors, music venues and old-school businesses that have survived the changing demographics.
